Domestic handset maker Ringing Bells will launch India’s most affordable smartphone ‘Freedom 251’ priced at under Rs 500 later this week, a move that is set to disrupt the booming handset market in the country. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikkar will launch the smartphone ‘Freedom 251’ on February 17.

"The phone will be popularly priced at under Rs 500... this event and launch stands as a true testimony of success of the latest initiatives taken by the Government of India," according to a media invite sent by the firm. 

A new entrant in the Indian mobile phone market, Ringing Bells had launched one of India's cheapest 4G smartphone bell smart 101 at Rs 2,999, recently. It has launched two other feature phones in the market.

The Ringing Bells ‘Freedom 251’ launch is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for “empowering India to the last person, transforming India’s growth story”, the Noida-based company said.

Once considered a luxury product, a smartphone has grown to become a commodity over the years. But on Wednesday, things will reach a whole new level. As part of its attempt to connect every Indian, local smartphone manufacturer Ringing Bells 'with immense support from' the India government will launch an affordable smartphone called the Freedom 251 on Wednesday. The Freedom 251, touted as India's cheapest smartphone -and likely the most affordable smartphone in the world as well - will sport a price tag below Rs. 500 (approximately $7).

At present, smartphones available in the market are priced around Rs 1,500. Last year, DataWind had announced that it is teaming up with Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Communications (RCOM) to launch the world’s most affordable smartphone, priced at Rs 999. The phone is yet to hit the market.

Established last year, Ringing Bells will start with the assembly of handsets in Phase-I and aims at full indigenous development of the feature-rich smartphones, it said.

With making a smartphone available at a price under Rs. 500, the Freedom 251 has the potential to significantly improve the lifestyle of people in the country with a low income. It will be interesting to see whether or not Ringing Bells is able to manufacture and sell this device at a large scale.

The company Bell is registered as ‘Ringing Bells Pvt Ltd’ on September 16, 2015 which means the company is just 4 months old now. According to records available at ministry of Corporate Affairs, Ringing Bells or Bell has three directors – Mohit Kumar Goel, Sushma Devi and Rajesh Kumar.

However, these directors, according to the industry, are unknown to the mobile phone business.

Ringing Bells has a paid up capital of Rs 6,000,000 and authorized capital of Rs 10,000,000.

Ringing Bells is planning to launch its products on February 12 at Delhi Gymkhana and the products would be available for distributorship from the next day. The distributors meet is planned at Unitech Gold Park in Noida.

The company has advertised about three mobile phones, one smart and two feature phones. The smartphone Bell Smart 101 is priced at Rs 2,999 and the feature phones, Bell Master and Bell 4U, are priced at Rs 999 and Rs 799 respectively. Besides the company also has another product, a power bank, priced at Rs 399.

How to buy Bell Freedom 251:

Booking of Bell Freedom 251 will begin from 18^th February from 6AM onwards. For the price of ₹251, this seems unbelievable, not yet sure if there are extra taxes. Another thing to notice is the site says ‘Booking’ which means that user will have to make payments well in advance. guess many will not have a issue with that considering the price, there will be a big waiting time...

An Issue to be noticed – Might be a scam

This company (Ringing Bells) had already launched a 4G enabled smartphone Smart 101 that is already listed on their website for a price tag of ₹2,999.

However it is not clearly mentioned from where the Smart 101 handset can be bought. Probably it was available on their own website, there are some users who had purchased it but have still not got the handset delivered.

“For your kind information, the bill of material (BOM) value for a product like this when sourced from the cheapest supply chain cost approximately USD 40 (Rs 2,700).

“And this, when translated into retail price after addition of applicable duties, taxes and with distribution and retail margins would be at least Rs 4,100 while the product is being sold at Rs 251,” ICA National President Pankaj Mohindroo said in the letter.

He further added that even if the product is sold at lower margins in an e-commerce type subsidised sale, the final consumer price cannot come below USD 52-55 (about Rs 3,500-3,800).

“Further, there is no visible mobile operator subsidy involved in this, which in any case is not the way the Indian mobile market operates,” he added.

Mohindroo said it would be advisable that officers from Deity get into the depth of this and ICA will provide any technical assistance, if required.
